The Suffering Saviour - by Robert E. Surgenor

WITH TENDERNESS, this little tract is written concerning the most wonderful Person who ever lived on earth, in hopes that the reader will come to know Him personally as Saviour.

As we behold the Lord in the prophecy of Isaiah chapter 6, we see the grandeur that surrounded Him and the glory that was His, centuries before He came into this world. As the Creator, He commanded the adoration and worship of heavenly creatures. We see Him sitting in majestic rule upon the heavenly throne, while angels bowed in reverence and humility, acknowledging Him as the Holy One, the Lord of Hosts. John bears record in his gospel, that this Man was none other than the Lord Jesus Christ.

“He was rich,” (II Corinthians 8:9). The title deeds of the vast universe were His. There was no mortgage laid against Him; “For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible . . . He is before all things, and by Him all things consist” (Colossians 1:16,17). The power of creation was His, and this creating power was one of the brightest jewels of His crown!

HIS WONDROUS BIRTH

In the birth of this glorious Person, we see a great mystery. For the first time, God dwelt with men in a body of flesh and blood! “Great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh” (I Timothy 3:16). The throne in heaven was now vacated as angels followed Him. Heaven hung a new star in the East in honor of the newborn King, and wondering angels announced His birth with joy. The Lord of all Creation clothed Himself with a body of flesh and blood — thus, the Infinite became an infant!

HIS FRAGRANT LIFE

“The Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world” (I John 4:14) — thus we see the object of His mission. “Thou shalt call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).

As we behold His spotless life, we are reminded “that, though He was rich — He became poor” (II Corinthians 8:9). Born in a place where cattle were fed, laid in a manger (a feeding trough for animals), and no crown of glory on His brow, the Mighty God who upheld the universe was now upheld in a blessed virgin’s arms (Luke 2:7)!

In His perfect Manhood, as He looked upon the foxes as they hurried to their burrows, and the fowls as they went to their resting places, He said; “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay His head” (Luke 9:58). Even though He went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, yet, “He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3). He be-came the song of the drunkards and the laugh of the scorner (Psalms 69:12; 22:7). In His humiliation, they gave Him a mock trial. “The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against His Christ” (Acts 4:26). They stripped Him, and He meekly gave His back to the smiters. The Roman scourge ripped His flesh and tore His back, fulfilling Psalm 129:3, “The plowers plowed upon My back: they made long their furrows.” He gave His cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: and hid not His face from shame and spitting (Isaiah 50:6). Thus “His visage was so marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men” (Isaiah 52:14). Mark His poverty dear, reader. Is it true that sin has so hardened your heart, that not a tear courses down your cheek as God describes the suffering of His only Son?

Unmoved by Satan’s subtle wiles,
By suffering, shame, and loss;
Thy path, uncheered by earthly smiles,
Led only to the Cross.

HIS SHAMEFUL DEATH

At Calvary, the world committed its darkest crime when it crucified the Son of God and killed the Prince of life. Many wonder why He came to endure such poverty, and then die. God provides the answer! “For your sakes He became poor” (II Corinthians 8:9). Our sin was the direct cause of His sufferings and death! There is no salvation for any who deny this solemn fact! It matters not what your estimation is of your own sin — it’s what God thinks that matters. You can only know God’s estimate of your sins by the Sacrifice that was needed to put them away. And what was needed to cleanse your sins? A life of good works? No! Confirmation? No! Baptism? No! Confes-sion? No! Oh, reader, if these things were sufficient, God would have spared His Son. It was needful for Him to suf-fer, bleed and die. Our sins required it. “Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God” (I Peter 3:18).

Thus, while His death my sin displays
In all its blackest hue.
Such is the mystery of grace;
It seals my pardon, too.

Friend, is it true that you can spurn such love by rejecting Him as your Saviour, in exchange for the world and its fading pleasures? “It behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day” (Luke 24:46). He has returned to heaven where He lives in the power of an endless life. All those who refuse Him as their Saviour will suffer for their own sins in the lake of fire — for eternity! May the reader accept God’s Provision for his sin.

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ,
and thou shalt be saved.”
(Acts 16:31)
