Your Conscience - by Robert E. Surgenor

I AM GREATLY AMUSED when I hear of so called intelligent men trying to tell us, through their research, that we evolved through various species into what we are today. Hook line and sinker, they have swallowed Charles Darwin's doctrine that we once were monkeys, but now are men! Now, those who propagate the doctrine of evolution directly contradict the teachings of the Lord Jesus and the truths of the Holy Bible. Did not the Lord Himself say, "Have ye not read, that He which made them at the beginning made them male and female" (Matthew 19:4)? Christ upholds and defends the divine account of man's creation in Genesis chapters one and two! But intellectual men reject this passage (I Corinthians 2:14) and make the Son of God a liar!

The question arises, why do men persist in propagating evolution? Here's why. If our race evolved from a microscopic nucleated mass of protoplasm into what we are now, then we have no divine Creator. If there is no Creator, there is no God to meet; and if no God to meet, then we can live it up, sin all we like, die, and that's the end. But is all this nonsensical thinking true? Absolutely not! A careful reading of I Corinthians 15:39 shows man's flesh is far different from that of beasts, fishes and birds. The human race began when "God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul" (Genesis 2:7). God says it, Christ taught it, and I believe it! Do you? You are a tripartite being of "spirit and soul and body" (I Thessalonians 5:23). Eternity is stamped upon you - and God you must meet!

CONSCIENCE DEFINED

Another convincing thing is, man has a conscience - something which no beast, fish, or bird has. Man is a complex being with at least seven vital faculties:

(1) HIS MIND is the thought-producing faculty!
(2) HIS MEMORY is the thought-retaining faculty!
(3) HIS SOUL is the thought-apprehending faculty!
(4) HIS SPIRIT is the thought-analyzing faculty!
(5) HIS HEART is the thought-appreciation faculty!
(6) HIS WILL is the thought-energizing faculty!
(7) HIS CONSCIENCE is the thought-convicting faculty!

God has put a conscience within you! It is God's link, for it holds you to God. Like a watchdog, it barks at the approach of temptation and sin. It is God's protest, and it cries out when you sin. Conscience is a two-syllable word, "con" and "science." "Con" means "in conjunction with." "Science" means "knowledge." Thus "conscience" means, "knowledge which we hold in conjunction with another - namely God." Here's how it works!

(1) I have sinned. (2) I know that I have sinned. (3) God knows that I have sinned. (4) I know God knows I have sinned. (5) God knows that I know He knows I have sinned.

CONSCIENCE DENOUNCING

In John 8:1-11, we see conscience working. Hypocritical religious leaders had brought a woman caught in the act of adultery to the Lord, saying, "Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest Thou?" They had never had personal dealings with God, but were trying to hide their own wickedness by condemning others. Looking at each one, He said to them, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." Conscience has no power to save, but it has power to cry out and accuse, and that is exactly what took place in the hearts and minds of her accusers. "And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one." Yes, all the accusers left the scene. Why? Because their conscience told them that they, too, had sinned. God's Word touches our conscience and convinces us that we are sinners! Who can say, "I have never sinned"? Conscience (if active) won't allow it! God says, "All have sinned" (Romans 3:23).

CONSCIENCE DEFILED

Conscience can be stilled, abused and silenced! Is yours? God speaks of those whose "mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny Him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate" (Titus 1:15,16). What a class of people! They say, "I'm a Christian!", but they have no true love for the Lord Jesus. They love the world's entertainment and pleasures. They are not disturbed about their position before God, for their conscience has lost its voice - it has become defiled.

If your conscience and memory are working, I'm sure that you have had thoughts about your past sins. Have you ever considered what it will be like to meet a Holy God in eternity? Revelation 20:12,15 says, "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works... And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." What an awful end for those who neglect the cries of their conscience and consequently die in their sins. Is there escape from this future judgment, and eternal punishment? Yes! God says, "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners" (I Timothy 1:15). "Christ died for our sins" (I Corinthians 15:3). "The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin" (I John 1:7). "He that believeth on Him is not condemned" (John 3:18). May God help you to see your need of the Saviour. Do, my friend, be honest with yourself, and be honest before God. Take the place of a sinner in need of salvation, and trust the Lord Jesus Christ as your Redeemer, and you will be saved for eternity!
